Preparing your own Homemade Cajun Seasoning couldn’t be any easier! Most of these spices you have on hand in your pantry. Control the heat by increasing or decreasing the cayenne.
Pat loves anything spicy.
Hot sauce. Habaneros. Cajun Seasoning. Not necessarily in that order. 😉
In fact, there’s a pizza place in town that lets you customize your pizza crust. My husband will order his pizza with a Cajun seasoning blend sprinkled over the crust, while the girls and I play it safe and get a butter and Parmesan or a plain crust. Although I sneak a piece of his every single time because I love the Cajun spice!
Since Pat loves this spice blend, I always have it on hand. My recipe for homemade Cajun seasoning blend calls for some basic herbs and spices that most of you have in your pantry.
To Make This Cajun Seasoning Blend You will Need:
- cayenne pepper
- ground thyme
- dried oregano
- paprika
- onion powder
- garlic powder
- black pepper
What Are The Best Spices For Making Your Own Seasonings and Spice Blends?
There’s no right or wrong brand. I will first say, buy what you can afford. However, not all spices are created equal as you tend to get what you pay for. Currently I use Morton & Bassett (not sponsored) because I find their spices to be top notch in texture, color and flavor. I love and respect what their company stands for not only with charitable work but also quality control. With that said some other wonderful brands I’ve used over the years are Simple Organic, Frontier Co-op and Penzys.
It’s as simple as measuring 1 teaspoon cayenne, 1 tablespoon both garlic and onion powder, 1-1/2 tablespoons paprika, 1-1/2 teaspoons each dried oregano, dried thyme and ground black pepper into a container.
Give them a stir.
Store it in an air-tight container, I like doubling recipes and storing them in glass jars.
Try using this homemade Cajun seasoning blend in:
- Cajun Chicken Pasta
- Roasted Cajun Potatoes
- Andouille Cajun Rice Skillet
- Cajun Tilapia
- Cajun Shrimp and Andouille Skewers
- One Pot Jambalaya
All recipes are super duper easy and are fabulous and flavorful. Thanks to a little help from this stellar homemade Cajun seasoning recipe.

THANK YOU in advance for your support!
LOVE your recipes & this one Sounds FABULOUS, but Where’s the salt? Never used a cajun seasoning without any salt at all. How much salt can we add to this recipe if we wanted to use salt please? Thank you!!
Hi Michelle! I really can’t say there’s a reason behind it. I would start with 1 to 1-1/2 teaspoons and see if that works for you. Enjoy!
