This triple berry kefir smoothie is healthful and delicious. Strawberries, blueberries and blackberries blended until smooth with vanilla kefir yogurt!
This summer I’ve been changing a few things.
Like posting a little less because it’s my first summer that I haven’t had to drive into work and I wanted to spend it with my girls going to the beach, shopping or laying in bed reading. You understand, right? Secondly is my diet. Not to be confused with “being on a diet” because I sure as heck can’t do one of those. But after suffering for the past 10 years with sporadic and horrific stomach pains I went to see a doctor.
A doctor who specializes in holistic, all-natural remedies vs. sending me off to a GI doctor to be scoped. Yeah, no thanks. So what I’ve found out is that spicy {whah!} and acidic foods {like lemonade- double whah!} are triggers for me. My lining of my stomach is overly thin and is extremely sensitive to certain foods. And I need to restore it back to its normal-ness. So my doctor gave me a vitamin supplement that will strengthen my stomach lining and instructed me to swirl a teaspoon into water and drink once a day.
Although I couldn’t because it’s *cue the dramatics* absolutely and utterly gag-worthy. Like a cross between malt-something and disgusting. So with the brilliant advice of my sister, I slipped it into smoothies. Until the second smoothie day when my youngest daughter and I were whipping one up and all of a sudden my 14-year-old Oster’s motor started to slow, and then some smoking occurred which smelt like a combination of burnt rubber and fish.
So I bought a Vitamix. I’ve wanted one for YEARS and just couldn’t justify spending the money. OHHHHH but it’s so worth it. Smooth has a whole new meaning with this thing and I love it.
So my girls and I have been on quite a smoothie-kick. Even my husband has got in on the smoothie-action. We drink one for either breakfast or lunch or a snack. This one so far is my family’s favorite. Three kinds of berries, a few bananas are whirled with kefir yogurt and a big splash of pomegranate juice for a little more antioxidants… because you can’t have too much of those.
Start by throwing in 6 ounces of washed blackberries.
Pour in a half cup of pomegranate juice.
Secure your blenders lid…
And pulverize until smooth. I don’t mind a few seeds in my smoothie but this really helps them to be blown away to smithereens for a super smooth smoothie drink.
Drop in a cup of rinsed blueberries…
Then throw in about 8 to 10 strawberries. I bought a HUGE Costco container of strawberries, washed and hulled them, froze them on rimmed sheet pans and stored them in the freezer for smoothies. Next time I think I’ll leave on the leafy stems. They’re totally edible and blend right on into the smoothie and add a little extra fiber.
I did the same thing to a bunch of bananas; peel, cut, freeze and store for smoothies. So I dropped in about 10-12 frozen banana slices. Which are about 1-1/2 to 2 small bananas.
Then I simply poured in a cup of kefir yogurt. I personally prefer kefir as to Greek yogurt. It’s basically lactose free, pourable and I get all those added benefits of its probiotics. Psst. any flavor of kefir will work wonderfully; plain, vanilla or whatever you prefer!
Then crank it up and let it do it’s thang until smooth and glorious.
And for an extra thick and more of a dessert-like-treat, I add in a cup or so of ice. It will no doubt make this smoothie extra thick to which you will need a spoon.
Too good to be good for you! But it IS! I know berry season is technically coming to an end soon. So I’m stocking up on all the in-season berries I can find so I can enjoy these all year round! Which means I’ll be making this triple berry kefir smoothie all year round!
I mean THAT color though?!
You must make this triple berry kefir smoothie asap!
Cheers to smoothies, new fancy blenders and drinks that taste like dessert!

Ohhhh that color! Looks so good Laurie!
Cheers to a delicious beverage and a happy gut, indeed!!! I’m so glad to hear you’re feeling better now that kefir’s in your life! I’m not a fan of the flavor when it’s plain, either, so I always have to add fruit. These smoothies are absolutely gorgeous and will definitely be the next way in which I consume kefir! Hope you had a great weekend, my dear!
Thanks Julia! <3
I absolutely loveee my vitamix. I make green smoothies every morning. This has been going on since June 9th when I got it for my bday. 🙂 Your smoothie sounds great! Glad you were able to visit a natural doctor to help you identify your triggers.
Love the look of this – so healthy and delicious
Hi Laurie,
Great post! Quick question about your chicken shawarma from 2010… do you use white vinegar or white wine vinegar in the recipe? (http://www.simplyscratch.com/2010/10/chicken-shawarma-marinade-with-garlic-sauce.html#comment-390997)
Omg, the color of this smoothie makes me swoon. The deep purple/maroon is sooo pretty! I love having a good blender – I need a Vitamix. I got this other popular brand and I’m not loving it after two years. Anyway – since I’m so in love with the color of this smoothie, I must make 🙂
