Over Christmas break, I pulled together what might be my most favorite salad. It’s a southwest salad that is loaded with all the veggies and topped with chopped seasoned chicken.
After making it twice, I’ve decided that it’s time to share the love with all of you. Which means, first up is the BEST homemade southwest seasoning blend.
To make the Southwest seasoning, you will need:
- ancho chili powder
- cumin
- smoked paprika
- (regular) paprika
- garlic powder
- oregano
- kosher salt
- ground coriander
- onion powder
- turmeric
- ground black pepper
- cayenne pepper
What Are The Best Spices For Making Your Own Seasonings and Spice Blends?
There’s no right or wrong brand. I will first say, buy what you can afford. However, not all spices are created equal as you tend to get what you pay for. Currently I use Morton & Bassett (not sponsored) because I find their spices to be top notch in texture, color and flavor. I love and respect what their company stands for not only with charitable work but also quality control. With that said some other wonderful brands I’ve used over the years are Simple Organic, Frontier Co-op and Penzys.
Measure and add 2 tablespoons ancho chili powder, 1 tablespoon each cumin, smoked paprika, (regular) paprika, garlic powder, oregano and kosher salt. Then you will also need; 2 teaspoons each of ground coriander, onion powder and turmeric, 1 teaspoon ground black pepper and cayenne pepper into a jar.
Stir well until combined.
Store the Southwest seasoning blend in an airtight container or small jar and in a cool dry place for 6 months or longer.
That’s it! I’d love to know how you use this seasoning! Please let me know what you made with it by leaving a comment below.

THANK YOU in advance for your support!
Please disclose where you purchased those adorable glass jars.
Hi Andrea! I believe Himalayan salt originally came in that jar. If you google Himalayan salt jar with spoon you’ll find some options but you’ll have to buy the salt to get the jar.
I made Blackened Fish Tacos with your Southwest Seasoning. They came out amazing. It is a recipe I had from my Hello Fresh delivery and we sometimes try to copy the recipes at home using our own ingredients, particularly if it is a big hit with the family, as those fish tacos are. Sometimes people shy away from the idea of making their own spice mixes at home because of the initial cost but over time it pays off. Another tip is instead of going to the supermarket or foodstore for small jars of pricey spices you can go to an Indian (or other Asian) store and purchase the spices in bulk.
I’m so glad, Maura! Thanks for offering a tip on buying in bulk.⭐️
I used the recipe without coriander and without smoked paprika (I didn’t have any) to coat chicken pieces for chicken quesadilla. It was good. I put the ingredients in a plastic quart size storage bag and shook them up before coating the chicken.
So glad to hear it, Sylyna!
This is a delicious combination of flavors! I love it on baked chicken breast topped with sauteed peppers, onions and jalapenos! Will try it on fish. I shared it with my sister, and she loves it on potatoes! Thank you for a great recipe!
So happy to hear it, Chris!
I remade a Hello Fresh flautas recipe and needed southwest seasoning. Thank you for the recipe! The seasoning on the black beans tasted wonderful!
I’m so glad to hear it, Gaby!
I used it for a Hello Fresh remake too, Gaby. It was perfect for the Chipotle Chicken and Rice Bowl. Laurie, thank you for the recipe!
I used this recipe with chicken breasts in my crock pot, added to some chicken broth. Shred the breasts and put them back into the seasoned liquid to absorb the flavors. I used the shredded chicken to make a Santa Fe Chicken Pizza Pie. It was awesome! BTW you can purchase 4 oz canning jars to store home made seasonings.
That’s fantastic, Linda! ⭐️
This is amazing on tilapia to make street tacos. Best recipe for make your southwest season I’ve found yet
I use this seasoning to make bomb quesadillas. It’s a really good blend
I mixed up the slices for the Southwest seasoning and used to flavor my ground pork for pork and pablono pepper soft tacos with homemade Pico and creama, they were delicious, the seasoning was amazing in the pork with pablono peppers purple onion, minced garlic and a little jalapeño.

Used in making pork flautas. They were amazing.
Thanks!!!
Due to health reasons, it’s very challenging to buy flavorful seasonings pre made. I was able to make this one with a very low sodium ct & it was still VERY tasty! I used it to season my chicken then put into a Cesar salad & dressed with tortilla crumbles & tomato basil feta. Yum!!
Hi! I’m using your seasoning blend to make pork carnitas. Thank you, it smells delicious
I used this recipe in my chicken white chili recipe. It definitely enhanced the flavor.
I’ve been looking for a homemade spice blend, but none ticked all my boxes – until now! This one is spot on. I didn’t change a thing. And I took MAURA’s advice and made fish tacos – YUM!!!
Fantastic seasoning blend I used on ground chicken, riced cauliflower & broccoli with sliced cherry tomatoes and diced bell peppers, onions served as a burrito bowl sliced avocado and a dollop of sour cream. Everyone loved it!
I use this blend on a lot of things but today I made pinto beans and used vegetable bouillon ( Better Than Bouillon brand), and 1 TBS. Of your recipe blend and my beans are delicious! I only made 1 1/2 cups of dry pinto beans, but the best I’ve eaten! Thank you
Hi, I’ve just found your spice mix recipe!
Boi am I glad I did!
I added this seasoning to some beef/pork burger patties and they were such a hit with family & friends alike that I’ve made them multiple times in the span of a few weeks. They’ve become a staple.
I halved the chilli and cayenne in the second batch though as I’m a 3/10 for heat tolerance. Husband loved the original though!
