This Honey Poppy Seed Dressing is sweet, slightly tangy and incredibly delicious and can be used on just about any salad! Yields 1-1/2 cups.
I can’t believe I haven’t shared this dressing with you by now. It’s only been a minor obsession of mine since a few years ago when I first tried it. Back then, I was a strict ranch person with an occasional Greek, Caesar, Italian and Catalina (depending on the salad). My eyes would’ve just skip over something like this at the grocery store. Why? I have no idea.
This was until a few years ago when my sisters Kelly, Julie and I flew down to visit our sister Christine for a long weekend. On one of those days we all were sitting outside gabbing and my sister served us the most fantastic salad I’ve ever seen. It had just about everything and anything in it. Things like salami, bell pepper, pear and mushrooms. It was an everything but this kitchen sink type of salad with literally 16+ different toppings.
She served this salad with an amazing poppy seed dressing. I was a little sketchy about trying it because it wasn’t any of the dressings I mentioned above. Back then, I liked what I liked ya know? But I ever so quickly added poppy seed dressing to my list of favorites.
And it’s a cinch to make from scratch.
To Make This Honey Poppy Seed Dressing You Will Need:
- mayonnaise – The base to this dressing. Adds richness and creaminess.
- honey – Gives the dressing flavor and sweetness.
- apple cider vinegar – Lends delicious tang to the dressing.
- poppy seeds – Adds little to no flavor but does give texture and little pops of blue.
- whole milk – This is optional as it’s used to thin out the dressing.
Start by measuring and adding 1 cup of mayo (whether it’s homemade or store-bought is up to you!), 1/3 cup honey, 2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar, 1 tablespoon milk (see below) and 2 teaspoons poppy seeds to a bowl.
You can hold off adding the milk to see if you’re happy with the consistency. Different types of mayonnaise can be thicker or thiner depending on the brand and type of mayo (vegan, light etc.).
Whisk until thoroughly combined.
Making sure the honey is incorporated.
That’s it my friends! No salt. No pepper. Just a sweet and mildly tangy Honey Poppy Seed Dressing.
Store in an air-tight container and refrigerate until ready to serve.
How Long Will Honey Poppy Seed Dressing Last in the Fridge?
If stored in an air-tight jar, this dressing should last up to 2 weeks in the refrigerator.

Hi Ann! I don’t see why not. It could possible change the taste bit but please let me know how it turns out for you! 🙂
Now you have me wanting to power eat salad. This dressing sounds absolutely lovely. Pinned.
This looks great! I love the sweetness of the dressing!
This dressing looks like it would go great on every salad known to man!!!! Sign me up for a whole jar! I’m on it!
How long do you think this dressing would last in the fridge? I’m nervous the milk would spoil (even though it is only a small amount) and turn the whole jar of dressing bad faster than I could use it up. Thoughts?
This sounds so good… we’ve been eating a lot of salads lately but I get bored with the same dressing all the time. Also, you’re a tease for making me wait to see the salad you have to go with it!
Thank you, Laurie. My family really enjoys this dressing and I like to keep it available in the fridge. It’s versatile; I use it on a variety of salads.
I love this dressing =) I had some leftover crushed pecans, so I decided to add them in. Really amazing flavor!! I’ve mixed up a jar about three times so far and kept it in the fridge.
I have been looking for THE perfect poppy seed dressing recipe…my search is over!!! Out of three recent recipes this is the one!! Thankyou for sharing.
Hi. When your recipe calls for mayonnaise, do you make your own or buy it? Which brand do you personally like from the store? If you make it do you have a recipe? Thank you.
Hi Connie! Both! Sometimes I make it and sometimes I buy it, it really just depends on what I feel like. My family prefers Hellmann’s brand and you can find my recipe for homemade mayonnaise in my cookbook 🙂 http://www.simplyscratch.com/the-book
Very Easy, quick a tasty a little sweet and a little tart. Will use recipe again!
I’m so glad you approve, Liza!
This dressing was easy and amazing. Liked the honey so much better than using sugar. Decided to make my own kale salad rather than buying the salad kit for a family dinner. This dressing was better than the one in the kit by far. Thank you for sharing this recipe. It’s a keeper. I will definitely be checking out your other recipes as I prefer to cook from scratch.
I’m SO thrilled to hear that, Cindy! Thank you for taking the time to make this recipe AND leave such a stellar review! ❤️
This sounds delicious I’m wondering what the calorie count would be since I’m on WW.
