Affogato is a classic Italian coffee based dessert consisting of gelato (or ice cream) and a shot of hot espresso. Take it up a notch by topping it with crushed biscotti, shaved chocolate or toasted nuts. Serves 2.
Have you dessert and coffee too.
The word affogato literally translates to drowned. And that’s because gelato literally drowns in hot espresso. I had a similar dessert years ago at a restaurant that sadly is no longer around. The hot espresso with cold ice cream is incredible! So I thought I’d recreate it at home. The only difference is that I top it off with crushed biscotti and sprinkle with shaved semisweet chocolate.
The more the merrier right?
To Make Affogato you Will Need:
- vanilla bean gelato or vanilla ice cream
- espresso
- crushed biscotti
- shaved semi-sweet chocolate
Add 2 scoops of vanilla bean gelato into 2 small cups or mugs. I have these Bodum thermo-glass cups and love them! I’ll link to them in the recipe printable.
Brew 1 (2 ounce) shot of espresso for a small serving and divide it among the cups. For larger servings of gelato, use a full shot per serving.
Garnish with crumbled biscotti and chocolate shavings.
However, you could add toasted chopped nuts like hazelnuts or almonds. Or maybe caramel or chocolate drizzle?
Enjoy! And if you give this Affogato recipe a try, let me know! Snap a photo and tag me on twitter or instagram!
