When your garden hands you tomatoes, make a classic Tomato Sandwich! The ingredients are simple and it only takes minutes to make, however this sandwich is incredibly delicious and a great way to use up those tomatoes on the counter. Yields 2 sandwiches.
Got tomatoes? Make a sandwich!
During the later months of summer, I tend to see lots of tomato sandwiches across several different social media feeds. Rightfully so as it’s simple, delicious and a great way to use up an over abundance of tomatoes. Although pretty straightforward, the ingredients are usually; bread, mayo, tomatoes, salt and pepper. But from doing a little research, I’ve found that there are a few “rules” to making them.
For example, beefsteak tomatoes are preferred but any hearty tomato will do. The sandwich should be seasoned well with salt and lots of freshly ground black pepper. White bread is the typical bread of choice, however to toast? or not to toast – that is the question.
Prepare to fall in love!
To Make This Classic Tomato Sandwich You Will Need:
- tomatoes – Use beefsteak or a hearty heirloom tomatoes.
- bread – I use a soft country style white bread.
- mayonnaise – Full fat (homemade) is best, however I like Duke’s mayonnaise.
- kosher salt – Enhances the flavors of the tomatoes.
- freshly ground pepper – Adds delicious bite and flavor.
Slice your tomato into not overly thick (but also not too thin) slices.
Toast or not to toast?
You can toast your bread or leave it as is. The toaster we have has a bagel option that toasts only one side so you get the best of both worlds. I’ve gone ahead and linked our toaster it below in the recipe printable.
Allow the toast to cool a bite (if using toasted bread of course) before spreading 1-1/2 teaspoons of mayo on the inside of one slice of bread per sandwich (use more if desired). Season with a pinch of salt and freshly ground black pepper.
Top with several slices of tomato, cutting them in half as needed to fit. Season again with salt and lots of freshly ground black pepper.
Replace the top slice of bread, gently press while cutting the sandwich in half.
I mean, would you look at that?🤩
Serve with potato chips and iced tea for the perfect meal.🫶🏼
