What Is Yum Yum Sauce?

Yum Yum Sauce is a popular mayo-based condiment most commonly used at a Japanese steakhouse. It consists of mayonnaise, ketchup and garlic powder. This creamy orange-y pink white sauce is sweet, tangy and addictive. Some recipes call for melted butter, however in my recipe, I leave it out and it tastes just as delicious (in my families opinion) . Feel free to play around and find which version you prefer.

What To Use With Yum Yum Sauce:

Because this sauce is so versatile, you can serve it a number of ways; sauce, dip, spread… I’ve gone ahead and listed a bunch of ways you can enjoy this sauce all week long.

  • Serve drizzled over fried rice or noodles.
  • As a condiment for cooked chicken, meat or seafood (especially shrimp!).
  • With stir-fried vegetables.
  • As a sauce/dip for fritters, potstickers, wontons or egg rolls.
  • Slather on sandwiches, burgers or wraps.
  • Use as a salad dressing.
  • Try as a dip for french fries or sweet potato fries.

To make This Yum Yum Sauce Recipe You will Need:

  • Japanese mayonnaiseKewpie is the most well known brand.
  • ketchupUse homemade or store-bought, I’ve even used sugar-free ketchup with success.
  • rice vinegar (unseasoned) – Adds delicious tang.
  • sugarFor a touch of sweetness.
  • paprikaAdds color and subtle flavor.
  • garlic powderLends earthy and slightly bitter flavor.

How To Make a Lighter (less calorie) Yum Yum Sauce:

It only takes a few ingredient swaps to make a lighter yet equally delicious Yum Yum Sauce. Simply substitute and use light mayo in replace of Japanese (Kewpie) mayo and use a sugar free ketchup – I recommend G Hughs or Primal Kitchen.

In a medium mixing bowl, measure and add 1 cup Japanese (kewpie) mayonnaise, 2 tablespoons ketchup, 2 teaspoons (unseasoned) rice vinegar, 1 tablespoon sugar, 2 teaspoons garlic powder, 1-1/2 teaspoons paprika.

Gently whisk until thoroughly combined.

Cover and refrigerate until ready to use. This allows the flavors to develop. Yum yum sauce tends to thicken up more in the fridge, so you might want to remove 30 minute prior to serving.

FOR A THINNER SAUCE:

If wanting a more drizzly yum yum sauce, consider thinning it out with 1 to 4 tablespoons of water.

How To Store Homemade Yum Yum Sauce:

Store in a air-tight container and keep stored in the refrigerator.

How Long Will Homemade Yum Yum Sauce Last?

Store properly and it can be enjoyed for up to 5 days.
