Salted Chocolate Peppermint Bark has dark chocolate as the base with white chocolate drizzle on top. Topped with crushed peppermint and a sprinkle of flaked sea salt!
So as I was sitting at my desk telling myself I really need to get on it and start posting some Christmas recipes, since I totally fell off the Thanksgiving wagon and didn’t really do much for you there. I thought of the one thing that really tastes like the holidays to me, peppermint bark. Then I thought about how I could jazz it up.
Sea salt. Big fat flakes of sea salt.
Sprinkled over the dark chocolate layer, and then pour over that… a creamy layer of white chocolate, sprinkled with lots of crushed peppermint. *sigh* I know for sure, if you’re a salty-chocolate lover like myself… you will be lovin’ this recipe! It’s easy-peasy to make, and if wrapped in a fun and festive tin would make a great gift for teachers, a co-worker or a neighbor!
To Make This Salted Chocolate Peppermint Bark:
- dark chocolate
- white chocolate
- peppermint candy or candy canes
- sea salt
Throw some broken pieces of peppermint candy canes into a mini food processor.
Pulse six to eight times until they are broken into tiny pieces and set aside.
Bring a shallow pan of water to a boil and place the bowl of dark chocolate on top (make sure the water isn’t touching the bottom of the bowl). Stir and let the steam melt the chocolate. Keep stirring!
Then before all the chocolate is melted I remove it off the heat and let the residual heat melt any of the un-melted chocolate.
Pour the chocolate on a foil lined sheet pan. Make sure the matte side is facing up.
Spread it evenly, or somewhat evenly and then sprinkle with the flaked sea salt. Pop it into the fridge so it can cool and harden.
Once the dark chocolate has cooled, repeat the same with the white chocolate. Melt, stir, you know the drill!
Once melted, pour the white chocolate over chilled dark chocolate. If the white chocolate is too warm it could melt the dark chocolate and smear when you spread it, if that happens don’t sweat it because you’re covering it up with loads of peppermint!
Lastly, sprinkle with the crushed candy. Press the pieces into the chocolate so they stick.
Place the sheet pan back into the fridge to harden; this should take about 20 minutes.
This Salted Chocolate Peppermint Bark is by far one of my favorite holiday sweets. Give this as gifts or keep it for yourself, I don’t care what you do just make this asap!

- 12 ounces dark chocolate
- 12 ounces white chocolate
- 3/4 tablespoon flaked sea salt
- 8 peppermint candy canes
Instructions
- Place foil on a large sheet pan {smooth side up}.
- Place broken pieces of the candy canes into a mini food processor and pulse 5-10 times or until broken into tiny pieces, set aside.
- Bring a pot filled halfway with water and bring to a boil.
- Reduce to a simmer and place a glass bowl on top, making sure the water isn't touching the bottom of the bowl.
- Place the twelve ounces of dark chocolate into the bowl and stir constantly until most of the chocolate is melted.
- Remove and continue stirring until chocolate is completely smooth. Pour onto foil lined sheet pan and spread out evenly.
- Sprinkle with the flaked sea salt and then place into the fridge for 20 minutes or until set.
- Bring the same pot of water up to a boil, reduce to simmer and place the white chocolate pieces into a glass bowl and set on top of the pot. Stir constantly until white chocolate is almost completely melted. Remove and finish stirring until smooth.
- Let cool slightly. Remove dark chocolate from the fridge. Pour cooled white chocolate over top. Smooth out with a spatula {dark chocolate might smear a little if the white chocolate is too warm}. Sprinkle with the candy cane pieces, and gently press the pieces into the chocolate so they stick. Place the sheet pan back into the fridge to harden, about 20 minutes. Break apart and serve.

Salty chocolate is like heaven. Adding white chocolate peppermint to it is a stroke of genius! Peppermint bark is the quintessential holiday treat to me as well, and adding salt to it only elevates it to exciting and delicious new levels. Getting candy canes today so I can feast on this soon!!!!!
Gorgeous!!
This chocolate bark sounds so, so good. I love the combination of chocolate and peppermint, and this seems like a good reason to finally pick up some flaked sea salt.

What a gorgeous bark, so perfect for gift ideas! Love mixing both chocolates together:-) Take care, Terra
I love the shot of the broken candy cane pieces! So festive…now I'm totally in the mood for Christmas!
peppermint and 2 kinds of chocolate??? Yes please!
PS. does the candy cane = very super crunchy?
Looks absolutely wonderful! Hope you have a great Thanksgiving!
Wow, this looks like it might be my favorite holiday treat too!
I randomly was craving peppermint bark the other day! I need to make this … I'm sure the salt makes it taste FAB!
This looks amazing! My husband loves peppermints, he would go crazy for this!
So simple and so delicious! How did I live so long without realizing how EASY this was? Christmas presents for coworkers just got a whole lot easier…
I never thought about combining salt & chocolate. Interesting!
Just made this for the first time. It's really delicious, but when I went to break it apart the dark chocolate and white chocolate separated. Any idea as to why this might happen??
Ann I honestly have no idea 🙁 sorry! Glad you still enjoyed it!
I had the same problem with the white chocolate separating from the dark chocolate. I just used Hershey dark chocolate chips and Nestle white chocolate chips. Still tastes great, just doesn't look as pretty. Before I broke it up, my son said it looked like Christmas pizza 🙂
Chocolate is pretty finicky… I've done some research, and chocolate that isn't melted correctly or brought up to the correct temperature {aka tempered} than it may not stick well with other chocolates.
http://video.about.com/candy/How-to-Temper-Chocolate.htm Hope this solves the mistery! 🙂
Thanks for looking in to that! I will check that out. I was also just thinking that maybe it's because I used kosher salt instead of the flaked salt. Think the larger crystals might prevent the chocolates from binding?
I made this last night! Amazing!! Any tips on breaking it apart?
Cindy~ I'd use a dull knife and break it up with that! 🙂
