This vanilla ice cream only calls for 5 easy ingredients; heavy cream, milk, sugar, vanilla extract and sea salt. So creamy and delicious!
By now you all know how I love the word simple. If my blog had a word counter it’d be tied with words like, quick and easy and delicious at a million and counting. This vanilla ice cream is all those things.
Beside on it’s own, it’s a great base for add-ins and can be topped with homemade caramel or chocolate syrup.
To Make This Vanilla Ice Cream You Will Need:
- heavy whipping cream
- whole milk
- granulated sugar
- pure vanilla extract
- sea salt
Start by measuring 3/4 cup of sugar and place it into a large bowl.
Pour in the two cups heavy cream and the one cup whole milk.
Then add my most favorite ingredient in the whole wide world, vah-nillah!
Sprinkle in a good pinch of sea salt… I busted out the good kind for this recipe! Nothing but the best for ice cream!
Whisk until the sugar dissolves…a bout three minutes or so.
For my Kitchen Aid mixer, the bowl has been in my freezer for a looooong time now, so I just turn it on and pour the creamy-vanillay-y ice cream base mixture into the frozen bowl and let the beast do all the work. But please follow your ice cream maker’s instruction manual.
Pour the semi-frozen ice cream into a freezer safe container… taste testing is a must at this stage. 🙂 Pop it into the freezer for 4 hours or up to overnight so the magic can happen and ice cream can be made.
I was surprised how easy it was to scoop straight-out of the freezer. I guess I was expecting it to have to sit and warm up a tad, but nope it was good to go! So I scooped myself an obnoxious portion… I was thinking I should have just eaten it straight out of the carton, but I kept it classy and used this beautiful bowl instead.
I have no words.
Just kidding, I always have words. This Vanilla Ice Cream is such a delight! I feel old just saying that… but it’s what popped into my head. I ate my Vanilla Ice Cream plain, as is. My girls topped theirs, one with toffee bits and the other with mini chocolate chips. No matter what you top this Vanilla Ice Cream with, it’s darn delicious. And crazy easy to whip up.
Looks like I’ll be adding more notches to my ice cream making belt — and every other belt I own ;).
Enjoy! And if you give this recipe a try, let me know! Snap a photo and tag me on twitter or instagram!

You can’t beat a bowl of vanilla ice cream and I love how easy this is!
Laurens new book looks and sounds incredible!! I have to go get one for myself!!
Nothing beats homemade ice cream and I love vanilla!
Perfect scoops! PS. I love your bowl!
And this is why I must get myself an ice cream maker!
So excited about Lauren’s cookbook! The ice cream looks perfect and your bowl is so pretty!
I really need to get on the ice cream making train! This looks amazing!!
I need a big ole bowl of this!
If it’s not bad, then experimenting with milk and cream is a wonderful thing. I use to prepare innovate new recipes in order to keep my family healthy and satisfied. I would definitely try this awesome recipe of yours. It seems perfect and not time consuming. What else I need if it works well, and everybody in my family likes it.
You’re killing me here… I’m out of homemade ice cream! Love this so much.
Absolutely mouthwatering ice-cream! And I am glad now you have an excuse to use an ice cream maker attachment!
I pretty much only use my Kitchen Aid Ice Cream maker for posts! Is that bad? I’m glad I have it, but if I wasn’t a blogger it might never come out of the box. But I actually LOVE vanilla, which some people think is strange, but it’s probably one of my favorite flavors.
I’ve only used my ice cream attachment about 6 times and it started leaking! I am so sad, and of course the year warranty is already up!
Everyone needs a good vanilla ice cream recipe! I love how easy this one is!
That’s horrible! I’d contact them… you never know 🙂
Mine had a leak in the base as well, but I can’t find the source. I did write them, but did not get an answer.
Can this recipe be the base for chocolate ice cream? If so how much cocoa would you add, for instance?
We made this vanilla ice cream and it was perfect- divine! Tasted like whipped cream study serve before freezing and after volia- perfect ice cream.
I use my ice cream make all the time! But I have yet to find a vanilla ice cream recipe I really love. I’ll have to give this a try!
Nothing beats classic vanilla ice cream. Stunning, Laurie!
Making ice cream is something I’ve yet to do. But I’d love too. And you make it look so easy!!
Looks really good 🙂 I’ve been debating whether to buy the ice cream attachment… but this might push me over the edge 😀
by the way, this bowl is stunning!! may I ask where you got it?
Thank you Steph! Actually it was a gift from a really good friend of mine so I’m not sure 🙂 but I think Home Goods 🙂
Yes! Finally something about cautioned.
I love vanilla ice cream! I think I will buy Lauren’s eCookbook. I’m sure my daughter will also love it. Thanks for sharing! 😀
Just churned a batch last night, the flavor was really good, not too sweet and definitely vanilla-y. However, we thought the texture was not smooth enough, even a little on the grainy side. And I used my brand new Cuisinart Ice Cream maker… Could it be because this was not a custard based recipe? Should I just get over my fear of tempering egg yolks and just get on with it?
Sounds like sugar granules made it grainy. Be sure to stir the mixture and fully dissolve the sugar before adding to the ice cream maker. It won’t dissolve when it’s churning.

Good, but… fake vanilla? Hmmm…

Just made this tonight, and it came out so good! I just got the kitchenaid attachment yesterday, and was going to make the custard style. I came across your recipe and saved a ton of time! We ate some at the soft serve stage and it was very smooth and flavorful. I hope the texture will be nice after it has been in the freezer over night—we will see. I plan on making the custard style soon, as well. Thanks for the recipe!
Made this tonight for my family and it is so DELICIOUS and so EASY! i will make this over and over again!
I’m so glad!
Just got my kitchen aid ice cream attachment for mother’s day and didn’t want the effort and time of the custard style so I googled a shortcut. This post was my first click and I went for it. I am so happy I did! It was smooth and creamy and flavorful and so much easier than cooking and chilling for 8 hours. (My husband planned ahead and had the freeze bowl frozen overnight before giving it to me so I was ready to get on with the ice cream making!) 🙂 I noticed that the recipes in the kitchen aid recipe book use 4 cups of liquid so I think I’ll try to double your recipe next time. Thanks so much!!!

Magnificent recipe,
We can make a lot of recipes by using ice cream maker whether its kitchenAid or other. I have read many positive reviews of kitchenaid ice cream maker but unable to find products in India. Please provide the kitchenaid stores information in India (both online or offline).
Here is list of kitchenaid stores in India.

Just came across this recipe and loved how simple it was to make and quickly it froze. I added 1 tablespoon rum and the seeds from a vanilla bean for a little extra flavor.
Ooooh I bet rum in this is fantastic! I must try it asap!
What an easy recipe so much easier than the cookbook that came with my KitchenAid plan on making three different ice creams for our next BBQ
That’s awesome! Thanks for leaving a review!
Just made this with my KitchenAid freezer bowl, but the mixer never froze during the churning process and just got mildly thicker. Any ideas?
Hmmmm that’s weird. How long did you mix it for?

Thank you so much for this recipe. I’ve had my KA ice cream attachment for 2 years and have never tried it. This weekend we celebrated my dads 82nd birthday so I decided to google ice cream recipes and this one looked easy so I gave it. OMG it was delicious and we all enjoyed it at the party! I’ve bookmarked it to my Favorite Recipes and can’t wait to try different variations! ❤
Since this recipe doesn’t make much, and my Kitchenaid ice cream maker makes 2 quarts, can this recipe be doubled and still fit the container?
Hi Laura! I would think so! I haven’t tried it, but I think it would work.

I made this yesterday for my husband on Father’s Day. He absolutely loved it. My daughter said that as much as she loves Blue Bell ice cream, she liked this better. I plan to continue to experiment with different flavors this summer.
That’s so great to hear, Carolyn! Thank you for taking the time to make this recipe, I’m so happy it was a hit with your family!
Quick question. If I am adding fruit, do I need to change the measurements?
I wouldn’t think so, Carolyn!
This is so easy and just yummy! Next time I will double it for my kitchenaid ice cream attachment since it holds 2 quarts. Thank you for taking the time to post this and I can’t wait to explore more of your recipes 🙂
Hi! Can I use 2% instead of whole milk?
I always use 2% milk and it turns out nicely. This is the only vanilla ice cream recipe I use. I’ve made it numerous times. Delicious!!!
I can’t tell you how many times I’ve made this recipe. It’s so good. I’m standing in my kitchen about to make some….again, but I’m going to crush up some Reese’s peanut butter pumpkins to mix in after it finishes the mixing in the ice cream maker. Yum!
It’s definitely a keeper! Glad you enjoy it, Jennifer!
Has anyone tried this using 1% milk instead of whole milk?
How big are the servings? It says Serving Size: 1 but I’m not sure if that means 1 cup or ?
Thanks!
Barbara
about 1/2 cup 🙂
This tasted like cool whip, not ice cream!
Hi Kristy! I’m sorry this recipe didn’t live up to your expectations. I’ve made this countless times and never had that outcome.
I think you may have, uh, whipped the cream.
I think most kitchenaid recipes suggest the lowest speed setting.
Also make sure your bowl has been in the freezer for at least 12 hours, longer is better!
I have to ask- where did you get the green canister with the “2” on it? I love it and have been looking for a canister set for years now!
Hi Courtney! Thank you! I actually purchased them from Pier One years ago 🙁
I just purchased the Kitchenaid ice cream attachment & wanted to try something simple. I’m allergic to eggs so this recipe was exactly what I was looking for. Easy, simple & egg free. It was wonderful. The taste is so good, very creamy. I loved it and even my very picky hubby liked it. Thanks for sharing it and I’m now sharing the link with all my friends.
So glad, Joann! Thank you for taking the time to make this recipe and leave such a great review!
I wanted to share a variation I did. Instead of a whole TBSP of vanilla I used 2 tap of vanilla and 1 tsp of almond extract. I’m gonna add some crumbled Oreo’s, about a cup for cookies & cream.
nice! I love the variation!
Like others have said, I too went in search of an easier recipe than the custard one in the kitchenaid cookbook and yours was the first one I found.
I made it and it was perfect and perfectly vanilla-y. My husband, who had been days without precious ice cream, declared it a winner.
Thanks for ththe recipe!
So glad, Ann!
I have been making this ice cream for a few years now. It is sooooo good. And my family absolutely loves when I make it.
I’m so glad!
Would this be a good basic recipe that I could add coffee syrup to? I want to make coffee ice cream but I don’t want to mess with actual coffee because I don’t drink it. I just like coffee milk and coffee ice cream.
Hi Jenn! Without testing it, I can’t say for sure. If you try it, I’d love to know how it turns out for you!
If you look near the vanilla extract in the store, they make a coffee extract! That would probably work. 🙂
My new ice cream attachment is coming….so happy! Vanilla is my favorite . So will try this recipe and thank you !!
By the way that bowl is gorgeous
Best ,
Carolina
It makes delicious sweet cold liquid, but nothing resembling ice cream.
That’s true Ben, just vanilla milk.
I love how simple this recipe is. However, I feel like my texture can be inconsistent. The last two times the bottom half of the ice cream canister had a crystalized texture. Any suggestions?
Hello! How long would you say the ice cream batter is mixed?
This simple recipe was delicious!! The second night I added chopped chocolate chips- totally scrumptious!
Carol K
Brilliant, Carol!
I followed this rrcipe to a tee, ended up with vanilla milk, so disappointed. I will try the egg mixture recipe, I think it might be better.
Hi Tracy! I’m so baffled as to how this can work for most and not for some. May I ask what type of ice cream maker are you using?
I ended up today making an egg base ice cream, came out a treat, I halfed the mixture, so got one tub of vanilla and one tub mint choc.
I guess as you say it works for some. Thanks again for your efforts to share. Tracy
I tried this recipe and will now be making it all the time! I was so impressed at how creamy it was right until the last bit!
Glad to hear it, B!

This is a fantastic recipe for my first time making ice cream! My husband is diabetic so I dialed the sugar way down to 1 TBS and it was fine (especially sugarless toppings). If you like artificial sugars, I’m sure you could replace the sugar accordingly. I live in a warm climate so I mixed the ingredients and made sure they were really cold before mixing them. I also found an article that talks about troubleshooting problems – it’s really useful: https://www.dreamscoops.com/tips-and-tricks/troubleshooting-homemade-ice-cream/#:~:text=The%20first%20thing%20to%20look,the%20ice%20cream%20freezing%20altogether. (Remove if not allowed!)
Second attempt to make ice cream. Kitchen aide bowl was in freezer overnight…Mixed ingredients, whisked to dissolve sugar then poured into chilled KAid bowl…I “stirred” 4o minutes but the mixture never thickened up. This happened with the first batch as well. I’m flummoxed. Any help would be appreciated.
Hi Susan! Sorry to hear this happened again! I did a little digging last night, searching “why ice cream won’t set up in the Kitchen Aid ice cream attachment”. A few commenters suggest that the bowl be place in a freezer that is 0° for 24 to 36 hours. I hope this helps!
Thanks for sharing such kind of wonderful recipe now I am able to make vanilla ice at home yeah it’s really osm
tastes like a bucket of cool whip.
My son and I made this for the first time, used a fully frozen bowl and let it churn for about 45 mins, it never set. We did make a 1 1/2 recipe, wondering if that made a difference.
probaly 🙂
this was amazing to use. thank you so much for posting this recipe. this will become one of my recipes that I make way more often! THANK YOU SO MUCH!
I made this ice cream and was astounded at how delicious it was! My dinner guest actually said to me “this is the BEST vanilla ice cream I’ve ever had!” I was speechless. Thank you so much for this recipe!
This looks Amazing! I love vanilla Ice cream. I like this recepi.
Wow Vanilla, its like a treat.
Thanks
I absolutely love this recipe, way better than the custard recipes I’ve tried. I’ve only made vanilla. I want to make strawberry ice cream when should I incorporate fresh fruit.
